A simple run or cycle may not directly improve your swimming technique, for example, but by challenging your cardiovascular system you can boost your endurance in the pool.

Likewise, if you're on holiday without a bike or running shoes (or maybe it's just too hot outdoors!) you can use a pool workout to the same effect.

Spice things up by using intervals, sprints, and varying things like incline on a run, or the stroke you use in the pool. 

If you're stuck for space, then an indoor circuit barely requires any room at all.

Bodyweight exercises such as mountain climbers, squat jumps, lunges, press-ups and burpees can be used to awesome effect when it comes to challenging your fitness level.
