Helen’s passion for fitness stemmed from her childhood days of training at the gym with her Dad.

Following this love for fitness, Helen went on to Derby College to study Sport Coaching and Development, then on to further her in knowledge in Personal Training by becoming a qualified fitness professional.

Over-loaded with fresh knowledge of the human body, Helen decided to put her own body to the test! She began experimenting with mind-muscle training and explosive movement, and over the past 2 years has watched her physique develop into how it is today.

We couldn’t wait to learn exactly how Helen built such a fantastic physique, and if she ever lets go of her strict diet to indulge in a cheat meal. Read on to find out…

When you started training how long was it before you noticed a change in your physique?

Good question! When I started training with my Dad, I had limited knowledge of the gym, nutrition, and what to do in order to make a difference to my physique.

For that reason, my body did not change a lot within the first 12 months of training. As my knowledge developed, I changed my adapted my training and began to see steady results over a period of around 18 months.

What advice would you give to those wanting to achieve their dream body?

Consistency is key!! In order to see results you must remain consistent with your training and nutrition. The body responds to long term routine and that is where success lies.

Also, be patient! Great physiques are not built in a day, sometimes it can take years to achieve the shape that you want. So yes, that means you must be consistent for years.

Mental strength is as important as physical strength in order to keep on track. It’s a mindset – it’s a lifestyle. Embrace the journey and love every second of it.

What area of your body do you enjoy working out the most and why?

I absolutely love to train shoulders and of course, glutes! Why do I enjoy working them? Well the saying goes;

you’re good at what you enjoy and you enjoy what you’re good at.

I have a lot of strength in my shoulders and glutes and for that reason I am really able to challenge these areas in the gym.

What about cardio are you a fan?

I am a big fan of interval training. I love my burpees, jumping lunges, skipping, and kettle bells!

Do you listen to music at the gym? What's your favourite workout track/artist/album?

I’d be completely lost without my workout playlists. What I choose to listen to really depends on what I am training. When it comes to interval training, I tend to go for Trap music.

When I lift, I listen to Hip hop, grime, and RnB remixes! If I am doing steady state cardio then I tend to go for something a little softer like Beyonce or Drake.

What motivates you when you don't want to train or when you want to eat rubbish?

Somehow motivation is not really an issue for me. I enjoy training so much that I am always happy to get my kit on and go and smash a workout! Sometimes after work when I feel tired I have an espresso, put my headphones in and that usually does the trick.

As for food, again, I have become rather strict with my nutrition and my body rarely craves the bad stuff anymore. If I am ever craving naughty food I flush out my cravings with plenty of water and eat a lot of veg to fill me up.

Do you have a favourite motivational quote?

Some say  health & fitness is all in the mind how true have you found this to be?

I couldn’t agree more! Your mind is your strongest muscle. It provides you with motivation, commitment, dedication, knowledge, persistence, courage, determination, and focus. Without it, all of your other muscles are useless.

Train your mind and you have already won.

What are your biggest achievements?

My biggest achievement has to be setting up my own website where you are able to download my very own exercise programmes that I have used to sculpt my physique.

Who is your all time hero?

A healthy, balanced diet is absolutely essential for so many reasons. Better health, increased energy levels, optimum brain and physical function… The list is endless!

90% of achieving a great physique comes from what you put inside your body. Therefore I make sure that I only eat the highest quality food in order to maintain my shape.

Do you use supplements? If so what do you use?

I only supplement whey protein. I take 1 scoop of whey protein straight after I train (weight lifting only) and I have 1 scoop of Casein protein before bed.

Which three whole foods could you simply not live without and why?

  1. Peanut butter– because it tastes like heaven in a jar and it is part of a healthy diet. To whoever invented peanut butter THANK YOU!!
  2. Chicken – I’d say that 70% of my protein intake comes from chicken breast, making it an absolute essential part of my diet.
  3. Bananas – quick and easy source of energy, tastes delicious, spreadable, mash-able - what’s not to love about bananas!?

What’s more important - hitting the gym or eating right?

Both are important, but as I mentioned earlier, I couldn’t have built my physique without the right nutrition.

It is SO important to be eating right and to learn as much about food as possible in order to maximise your results! Don’t waste all of your hard work in the gym by not fuelling your body with the nutrients it needs in order to recover and grow.

Are there any foods you would never put into your body?

Trans fats and processed sugars are the enemy! I avoid most processed foods and try to stay as clean and close to nature as possible when I eat.

Do you have cheat meals? What would you have?

I treat myself to a cheat meal once a month. I absolutely love curry and pizza so it is usually one of the two. I always leave room for a dessert too. Something chocolatey and gooey with ice cream suits me just fine!

Do you drink alcohol?

I rarely drink alcohol except on Christmas day and when I am on holiday on a hot beach somewhere. I love Pina Coladas!

What’s your favourite Muscle Food product?

I love the Nuts n’ More nut butters and I am a big fan of the lean mince too.

I am also DYING to try the protein pizza!

What is your next goal?

At the moment I am focussing on maintaining my physique ready for my next fitness expo. I have plans to do some travelling over the next 12 months but nothing is set in stone yet.

I need to keep on top of my figure as I never know where I might be heading to next.

If you could give one bit of advice to those just beginning to train - what would it be?

Keep on reading and learning. The more knowledge you have on training and nutrition, the more you will apply it and the more effective your results will be.

I spent the first 12 months of my training simply using basic cardio equipment and neglecting my nutrition, I may as well have not even bothered going to the gym! Don’t waste your time and don’t be afraid to ask questions.
