Is Having A Bath As Good As Exercise?

Running yourself a nice hot bath, filling it with lots of nice smelling bubbles, maybe even tossing in a few fizzy salts, and letting your body sink into that tub of relaxation is certainly one of life’s little luxuries.

It’s even better when you have a handy place to store a sneaky glass of bubbly…

But did you know that having a soak is actually incredibly good for your health?

AND, recent research has even suggested it can help you lose weight too!

We’re super serious right now…

According to the findings discovered by a team at Loughborough University, having a bath is a form of ‘passive healing,’ which can have a similar impact on the body in a similar manner to exertive exercise.

The clever guys and gals measured the effect having a bath had on blood sugar levels, which, as you know, must be controlled for peak metabolic fitness – and calories burned.

The test subjects had these levels measured before bathing and 24 hours after as well as the blood sugar levels before and after exercise. The team then compared the two and unearthed the startling discovery!

Steve Faulkner is the man with a plan, and he said:

‘We recruited 14 men to take part in the study. They were assigned to an hour-long soak in a hot bath (40˚C) or an hour of cycling. The activities were designed to cause a 1˚C rise in core body temperature over the course of one hour...

... Cycling resulted in more calories being burned compared with a hot bath, but bathing resulted in about as many calories being burned as a half-hour walk (around 140 calories).

So there you have it - having a bath is just as good as conducting 30 minutes
of LISS!

We wouldn’t advise cancelling your gym membership just yet tough…
