Is WHEN You Eat More Important Than WHAT You Eat?

Which is more important – what you eat or when you eat it? Well one paper published in the British Journal of Nutrition claims the latter to be more crucial to any healthy eating plan.

Scientists from Kings College London and the University of Sao Paulo are suggesting that times to eat meals should be featured in national dietary guidelines, following their analysis into the nutritional effects of eating habits.

“There seems to be some truth in the saying ‘eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a pauper,’” Dr Gerda Pot, lecturer in nutritional sciences at King’s College, said. “However, this warrants further investigation.”

And it’s true – further studies are required to establish more specific effects of irregular meal times on the likelihood of obesity and diabetes, but the team sound pretty sure of themselves on this.

But, to balance it out, the research evidence suggests eating more calories in the evening is associated with obesity. What’s clear is this is a divisive subject – with many people sticking to strict eating times and others being more flexible.
