Smoked Chipotle Chilli Meatballs

This fiery recipe is BURSTING with spicy awesomeness and takes just 30 minutes to rustle up!


For the Spice Mix

  • 10g pea protein
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1/4 tsp chipotle (or regular) chilli powder
  • 1/2 tsp sweetener
  • 1/4 - 1/2 tsp rock salt

For the Meatballs

  • 200g extra lean beef mince
  • 1 tbsp smokey chipotle protein spice mix
  • 1 tsp (5ml) Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp (15g) tomato puree

For the Sauce

  • 250g (1/2 carton) tomato passata
  • 30g (about 1/4) red pepper, diced
  • 30g (about 1/4) chopped red onion (or 1/2 tsp onion powder)
  • 2 tsp smokey chipotle protein spice mix
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp tomato puree
  • 1/4 tsp coconut sugar (or sweetener) salt, to taste
  • 15g extra mature cheddar, grated

  1. Pre heat your oven to 200°c
  2. Mix together the beef mince, spice mix, Worcestershire sauce and tomato puree and bring together into a ball with your hands. Divide into 6 large meatballs.
  3. Heat your frying pan with spray oil, or coconut oil. Fry the pepper and onion until softened (5-10 minutes). Or, for extra speed, microwave them first and then add to the pan.
  4. Add the meatballs and cook until browned. Pour in the passata and add the remaining ingredients. Stir to combine and simmer for a minute or two.
  5. Transfer to a small baking dish. Grate over the cheddar. Bake in the oven for 25 minutes, or until bubbling.
