What Happens To Your Body When You Quit Smoking For One Year?

  • With Stoptober in full flow, millions will try and quit smoking
  • While some will probably stop just for the month, did you know about the HUGE health benefits of stopping for a year
  • Jason England takes a look at a timeline of what happens to your body after quitting for 12 months
The Last Cigarette

Stoptober is here – and as a former smoker, I know how much of a pain it can be to quit smoking.

There must be over a hundred “last cigarette ever” moments in my life – all of which turned out to be false after something like a bad day at work, or an argument with the girlfriend.

But what helped me finally kick the habit is knowing how much your health improves after stopping.

So with that in mind, here is a year-long timeline of what happens to your body after quitting smoking.

After 24 Hours

Cigarette I quit

Within the first 20 minutes, your heart rate will drop to a normal level. A further two hours after, your blood pressure also returns to normal.

But be wary of Nicotine withdrawal symptoms at this time – causing intense cravings, anxiety and an increased appetite!

Fast forward to 12 hours, and that carbon monoxide in your body has decreased to lower levels, increasing the amount of oxygen in your blood to normal levels.

And after the first full day, your risk of coronary artery disease has already begun to reduce! While this is just the beginning, it’s amazing to see just how much your body improves after just 24 hours.
