Can Working Out Undo The Harmful Effects Of Alcohol?

Stop. The. Presses. New research has found that people who work out regularly may reduce their risk of dying from alcohol related illnesses!

The University of College London and University of Sydney study, which looked into the lifestyles of 35,000 people, found that all you need to do is spend a minimum of two and a half hours a week working up a sweat to reap the benefits.

While health guidelines advise that you should cap your alcohol intake to 14 units per week – approximately 7 pints of beer – the new research suggests that exercising mitigates the deadly impact of alcohol, even when you knock back a few too many.

How exciting is that?!

The study showed that drinking, even within guidelines, could have a hugely devastating effect on your body raising the risk of death by at least 16 per cent and cancer by 47 per cent.

But just 150 minutes of moderate exercise, like walking, playing golf or even gardening (WE KNOW!) completely annulled the risk of death and slashed the cancer risk by 36 per cent.

In an extract taken from the British Journal of Sports Medicine, scientists noted that, “the relationship between drinking alcohol to excess and increased risk of death is significantly weaker in people who are physically active.”

“Therefore, it appears that physical activity may partially offset some of the harmful effects of drinking, particularly alcohol-attributable cancers.”

Exercise is protective of health, whereas drinking is damaging.

But, before you reach for that gin and tonic, don’t forget about all the other countless studies showing just how harmful regular boozing can be.

From cirrhosis of the liver, jaundice, seven different types of cancer and raised blood pressure, drinking can wreck havoc on your body.

The study also looked at a vast range of people with differing diets, workout goals and drinking habits, and maybe small changes in these is what caused the risk pattern to change and not exercise at all.

And the experts even admitted it was difficult to now if people were telling porkies about their estimation of alcohol intake and exercise.

So, while it’s pretty good news, it’s probably best to take it with a pinch of salt and continue to workout hard and limit your alcohol intake.

At least now though, we can all feel a little less guilty when having your Friday night pizza and beer.
