Zara Phythian - Martial Arts Actress

From Martial Arts World Champ To Hollywood

I’m Zara and probably best known for my Martial Arts history. I started training as a Martial Artist from a very young age. I began with Shotokan Karate and worked my way up to 2nd Dan before I hit my teens. That’s when I got introduced to Nottingham’s School of Champions, a renowned Martial Arts Centre.

When I got into my teens that’s when I really started my cross training and focused on Tae Kwon Do, Shaolin Wu Shu, Kickboxing and Freestyle Karate. I also started competing on the national and international fight circuits, becoming a multi style sports martial arts champion 13 times!

The buzz you get from competing is hard to compare to anything, but when I was winning 4 US National Belt Titles at one event I was spotted by a producer for film. I found the discipline, dedication and commitment you need in acting is very similar to what you need in martial arts, so I made the tough decision and retired from international competitions to concentrate on my acting career.

I was thrilled in 2006 to become the first UK Martial Artist to be inducted into the International Karate and Kickboxing Hall of Fame. In my spare time, I run my own centre for Martial Arts called The Personal Best Academy. I opened this because I wanted to be able to pass on my knowledge and experience to those wanting to take up Martial Arts.
